Stop water safely

  1. Keep people and pets away from water near electrical outlets, wiring or appliances.
  2. For a fixture leak, use an accessible shutoff under the sink if safe. For spreading pipe leaks, identify the main shutoff and close it only when reachable without danger.
  3. A handwheel generally closes clockwise; a quarter-turn lever closes perpendicular to the pipe. Never force a seized or unknown valve.
  4. Do not remove water-heater panels, touch gas lines or cap pressure-relief discharge pipes. Avoid scalding hot water.
  5. For sewage backups, stop using affected fixtures and avoid contaminated water. For suspected gas leaks, leave the property and contact the gas utility or emergency services from safety.

This site cannot dispatch emergency responders. For immediate danger call your local utility or emergency services.

What kind of plumbing emergency is it?

Active pipe leak

Water continues spreading even with fixtures off. Report location, shutoff status and any electrical risk.

Water heater failure

A leak at a fitting differs from pooling beneath the tank. Note heater type and model without opening panels.

Drain or sewer backup

Multiple fixtures backing up suggests a different problem from one slow drain. Stop fixture use and avoid sewage.

Frequently asked questions

How fast does an emergency plumber arrive?

Arrival and availability depend on the provider, your location and demand. Call to be connected with a provider and confirm the arrival window directly with the provider before you agree to the visit.

What should I do if my water heater is leaking?

Stay away from hot water, electrical hazards and gas controls. Close a clearly identified accessible cold-water shutoff only if safe. Never open equipment panels or cap a pressure relief line.

Should I turn off my main water valve for a burst pipe?

If you can safely identify and operate the main shutoff, do so. A wheel usually closes clockwise; a lever closes perpendicular to the pipe. Never force a stuck valve or enter flooded electrical areas.

How much does emergency plumbing cost?

Published 2026 national reference ranges include emergency plumbing labor of $100–$500 per hour and water-heater repair of $228–$1,017. These are not this website’s rates or an estimate. Ask about trip fees, after-hours charges, parts and a written scope.
