Local know-how

Home repair emergencies in Indiana and Westmoreland Counties

Most houses in these towns are older than the national average, and the weather is hard on them. That changes what goes wrong and who you need to call. Here is what is different about each town, and what each season tends to bring.

Indiana, PA (15701)

The Indiana County seat and home of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Census estimates put the borough's median home at 1957, with about 1,537 of 6,684 housing units built in 1939 or earlier, and about 55 percent of homes are rented.

Water comes from Pennsylvania American Water's Indiana District; the borough runs the regional wastewater plant on Wayne Avenue; electric service is Penelec. White Township surrounds the borough and shares the 15701 ZIP but has its own permit office.

Blairsville, PA (15717)

A compact river borough on the Conemaugh, settled in 1818. About one in three of its roughly 1,738 homes predates 1940, and the median year built is 1954.

The Blairsville Municipal Authority supplies water, sewer and refuse service, natural gas comes from Peoples, and Uniform Construction Code permits go through the Indiana County Office of Planning & Development.

Greensburg, PA (15601)

The Westmoreland County seat. About a third of its 7,262 housing units were built in 1939 or earlier, and on September 3, 2026 a severe storm brought flash flooding, downed trees and a City disaster declaration.

Water comes from the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County, most sewer service from the Greater Greensburg Sewage Authority, and electricity from West Penn Power. Hempfield, South Greensburg and Southwest Greensburg share the 15601 ZIP but follow their own rules.

Latrobe, PA (15650)

An older Loyalhanna valley city whose median home dates to 1952; about two-thirds of homes were built before 1960, many with stone or block basements and floor drains tied to the sewer.

The Latrobe Municipal Authority has handled water and wastewater since 1942, West Penn Power supplies electricity, and some homes with a Latrobe address are actually in Unity or Derry Township.

What each season brings

Winter: frozen pipes, no heat and ice dams

NOAA normals for the area show about 130 nights a year at or below freezing, with average January lows between about 18 and 21°F. Older houses with supply lines in outside walls, unheated porches and crawl spaces freeze first, furnaces fail under constant load, and snow on poorly insulated roofs backs up as ice at the eaves.

Late winter thaw: wet basements

Snowpack melting over frozen ground, plus March rain, is when sump pumps get tested and stone foundations seep. A pump that hums without moving water, or water rising through a floor drain, is worth a call before the water gets deeper.

Summer storms: roof leaks, outages and sewer backups

June and July are the wettest months locally, mostly in short, heavy thunderstorms. Wind lifts shingles and drops limbs on service wires, power outages stop sump pumps, and older combined sewers can push water back up through the lowest drain in the house.

Utility, borough or repair pro?

A whole street without water, power or sewer is usually a utility or municipal problem: report it to your water authority, electric company or borough first. When only your house is affected, the problem is almost always on your side of the meter or curb stop, and that is private repair work.

If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 and your gas company from outside before anything else. Stay well away from downed wires. Once everyone is safe, call the number on this page and describe what you are seeing.

What we are, and what we are not

Small Town Home Services is a referral service, not a contractor. We do not employ plumbers, electricians, roofers or technicians, and we do not set their prices. Calls may be recorded and may be routed to an independent local service provider, and anything you agree to is between you and that provider.

We may be paid by providers or call networks when calls are connected. Read how this referral service works and how we are paid for the details.

Prepare Your Home Project Brief

Collect the category, property ZIP code, symptoms and timing in a summary you can copy before speaking with a provider. No appointment is created.

Creating a brief happens locally in this browser tab. Nothing in the brief is submitted by this tool. An optional callback request, if available, is a separate action requiring your consent. Site analytics may process non-project activity; see our privacy notice.

Included in your brief; not used to check contractor coverage.

Include useful details or measurements. Leave out personal or sensitive information.

Example: “Kitchen faucet drips at the spout, model unknown, started yesterday. Available next week.” Describe only what you safely observed. The brief does not submit a service request or confirm availability.
